How popular is Urethroplasty Surgery in India?

What is meant by Urethroplasty? As the name suggests, it is a term used to define the type of surgeries associated with the walls of urethra. These are intended for repair of defects or to treat urethral stricture by urethral reconstruction with less complications and risks. Successful urethroplasty relieves pain and discomfort during voiding, frequent tendency to urinate and the urinal flow rate leading to a more comfortable state. Medical Treatment India has proven to be affordable and satisfactory world-wide. Patients from other countries approach India for urethroplasty mainly because of the cost factor. The less expense is mainly because of the international currency exchange rate in India. Surgeries that are seemingly expensive in the US and Canada turn out to be affordable when done in India. India has emerged as a global leader in medical treatment in the past decade thanks to the dedicated doctors and state-of-the-art medical infrastructures that the Indian hospitals provide.

Urethroplasty Surgery in India is of four types, viz. Anastomotic, Buccal Mucosal Onlay Graft, Scrotal or Penile Island and Johansen's Urethroplasty. How to choose which of the above mentioned techniques depends on a few factors such as the condition of the urethra, the physical condition of the person, the extent of the defect, position of the defect, etc. Urethroplasty is not a minor operation and could even take up to 8 hours. Patients take are around 2-3 days to recuperate after the operation and return home to their normal day-to-day activities. A preoperative phase of the surgery involves undergoing an urethrography to determine the position and extent of the defect. The patient will also not be allowed to ingest anything by mouth 12 hours prior to the surgery. The patients are constantly monitored for the vital signs post surgery until he/she is discharged.

In anastomotic urethroplasty, a silicone catheter is inserted through the penis and threaded into the proximal-urethral end. The dorsal one-third of the urethral anastomosis is begun, completed, and the catheter is retracted slightly and fibrin glue is applied to the suture line to help prevent leakage and fistula formation. The catheter is then withdrawn from the penis and replaced by an appropriately-sized Foley catheter and the incision closed. In buccal mucosal onlay grafting, a graft is positioned to cover the incision done on the outer borders of the defect and then fibrin glue is applied. Johansen's urethroplasty has evolved drastically over the years as an important Urethroplasty Surgery in India and is a two-stage procedure in which the placed catheter is left to create a diversion till the wound heals. After healing, the catheter is removed.
