Depositing Bone in the Bank: A look at Bone Health and Osteoporosis

The development of strong bones is dependent on the rate of bone formation and bone breakdown, and this rate is dependent on the availability of calcium in the body.

A good way to understand bone health is by using the analogy of a bank with the body as the bank teller, calcium as the currency and bones as the bank (storage).  In the body, calcium is the currency for all cellular processes so when there is a restriction to the amount of calcium available, the body will need to make a withdrawal from the bones in a process known as bone resorption to maintain vital bodily functions.

Since the bones require calcium for structural integrity, they become weaker and weaker with more and more withdrawals.  If this occurs for long periods of time osteoporosis may develop leading to fragile and brittle bones which are prone to fractures.
